We think we know a lot about about dinosaurs, but in reality we probably know little. They came in all shapes and sizes, were both ferocious and docile, and more importantly than anything, they were mysterious. Many of us are fascinated about the majestic beasts that roamed the lands millions of years ago, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise really. They may be extinct, but prehistoric creatures still live on in our minds.

Lost caves kentucky12/31/2023 ![]() Under this arch an enterprising Kentuckian has located his grist mill and the noise of falling water and the clattering of the cog wheels by giving life and animation increases the picturesque effects. A solid arch of rock about fifty feet in thickness forming the roof. At one end the river rising at once full grown, flows about three hundred yards enclosed by the steep and rocky sides of the ravine then enters a cavern one hundred and fifty feet wide at its mouth and at least forty or fifty feet high. Descending its precipitous sides, a scene of wild and rugged beauty presents. A growth of fine timber here skirts the road and would prevent us or the casual observer from noting the large sink of an oval form at the bottom of which (one hundred feet below) flows a river twenty or thirty yards wide. Three miles from Bowling Green on the Nashville Road we visited cave mill. In 1847, Thomas Kite provided the following description of the river and cave in his journal: Undercut benches and recirculation with scalloped walls also serve as minor immobile flow regions. The detached chert blocks create minor detention backwaters containing immobile-flow regions. Blocks of the Lost River Chert routinely detach from cave walls and line the cave floor as the limestone dissolves away. Īccording to Malcolm Field and Guanguan Li:įlow along the length of the cave is relatively uniform along much of its length, but older, higher passages can be inundated by flood-flow conditions. This caused plumb bobs to be swept underground, returning erroneous measurements. The blue hole is though in fact linked to a further underground river. The most interesting section is the blue hole, which is the cause of the Lost River being listed by Ripley's Believe it or Not as the "Shortest, deepest river in the world." Plumb bobs indicated that the blue hole was 437 feet deep, while the river itself is only 400 feet long. The river appears above ground in three short sections before flowing into the mouth of the cave. Louis Limestone, both of which were laid down in the middle to late Mississippian Period. In Python there are many different data types but the ones we are going to talk about now are the following: The data type of an object dictates the different things that we can do to it and use it for. Once we've done this I recommend saving your file by hitting CTRL + S or by clicking File > Save As.Ī "Data Type" is simply a classification of information. This should open up what looks like a blank file. Once we've done that we need to click File > New File from the top menu bar. To do this simply find "IDLE" and double-click to run it (you can type IDLE in your windows search bar and it should show up). To get started we need to get to the text-editor built into IDLE. This is great for testing small snippets of code but it's not what we want for right now. In the shell you can type any python code you wish and after hitting enter it will immediately be executed. The shell is what will appear after launching the program. IDLE has two main components, a text-editor and a shell. Luckily for us when we install python it comes with its own editor named "IDLE". Python has a series of data types that define a set of values with characteristics and specific properties, these data types allow us to handle information. Whenever we are writing python code we want to use some sort of a text-editor or IDE (Integrated Development Environment). This allows for programs to be written and tested much faster than many other languages. The main advantage python has over other languages is its simplicity. Python is most commonly used for web design but is also capable of making games, performing data analysis, controlling robots, creating GUI's and much more. It is an extremely powerful language that is used in a variety of different applications. Its syntax (words, structure and commands) is very similar to English which allows it to be learned quickly. Python is a very beginner friendly language. Hence, they are mutable objects. Before starting please ensure that you have downloaded and installed python 3.0+ from the python website. It is possible to add, delete, insert, and rearrange items in a list or dictionary. On the other hand, items in a List or Dictionary object can be modified. Numbers, strings, and Tuples are immutable, which means their contents can't be altered after creation. Some of these values can be modified during processing, but contents of others can't be altered once they are created in the memory.

In fact, in Japan women are considered to be "tanuki-faced" (square/round) or "kitsune-faced" (inverted triangle/heart-shaped), the latter being considered sexier, so to call a Japanese woman fox-faced is looked upon as paying them a very sultry compliment.įortunately, all of these fox-spirit types can be cowed by the presence of dogs. In modern fiction, such foxes turn up often: anime in particular has them as a staple whenever mythology appears, while Western writers note the similarities between them as The Fair Folk, and use them thusly.Īdditional fun fact: kitsune are common Animal Motifs for Japanese character types, and are often portrayed as foils and rivals to Tanuki. In most depictions, they follow commands faithfully but are capable of slowly bringing their masters to ruin (most often by multiplying until they run out of food). One particular variety, the small, weasel-like kuda-gitsune or "pipefox" (sometimes known as kanko, izuna or osaki) is employed as a Familiar by human families. (And in that last case, their children - while not foxes themselves - will inherit magical powers.) Or, as mentioned above, they might fall in love and marry, and live happily that way. They may also have squinted eyes or Eyes Always Shut (which is called " kitsune no me" in Japanese, meaning "fox eyes" or "shifty eyes"). Physically, they have a few distinguishing features: as already mentioned, they have multiple tails (up to nine). The kitsune, on the other hand, is depicted as sometimes marrying with humans, in which capacity they prove to be devoted spouses and parents.Ī fully nine-tailed fox may be depicted as being incredibly powerful, and dangerous even if they're not malevolent. In Vietnam, they are referred to as hồ ly tinh (a direct transliteration of huli jing) or yêu hồ ("demon fox").Īnd likewise, differences exist in the depictions of such beings-for example, the Korean gumiho/ kumiho is more often presented as outright malevolent than is the Japanese kitsune - often killing humans in order to eat their hearts and/or livers. In Korea, they are known as gumiho/ kumiho ("nine-tailed fox").In Japan they are called bake-gitsune (" changed/changing/monstrous fox") or youko (" youkai fox"), though both are often localised simply as kitsune ("fox").In China, they are called huli jing ("fox spirit") or jiuweihu (" nine-tailed fox").However, the different cultures of East Asia have within them different names for these supernatural foxes: In East Asia, Fantastic Foxes are prominently featured in folklore.īroadly speaking, these East-Asian foxes have a number of similarities: they're often intelligent, shapeshifters, and possessed of multiple tails. Now he’s after a much deeper transformation.ĮFRON PREFERS TO do Los Angeles in “small doses,” popping in to visit friends and take meetings. He has done demanding physical transformations for roles. But Efron, now 34 and with 16 years and a stack of films between him and High School Musical, still hasn’t found the niche that will carry him through the next few decades. He looks to Leonardo DiCaprio as a North Star, both as an actor who seems to have achieved balance in his life and for the roles he selects ditto Robert Pattinson, another veteran of teen stardom. In this chapter of Efron’s career, he is seeking depth. Besides a new health and fitness philosophy, Efron has a new movie- The Greatest Beer Run Ever (premiering September 30 on Apple TV+), in which he acts opposite Russell Crowe and Bill Murray-and new career cravings. Efron, like many of us, has newly emerged from his own pandemic cocoon, blinking in the sunlight, ready to unfurl a revamped personality with back-to-school optimism. He was reconsidering how he ate (vegan), how he trained (really hard), and how he slept (poorly). The New York Post called it “a far cry from his ripped physique in Baywatch” Twitter called him Daddy.Ī world away, Efron, too, was rethinking the body he’d become known for. In July 2020, as Netflix viewers began watching Down to Earth, some commented on his “dad bod”-which, to be clear, was a dad bod only relative to his lifeguard bod. Meanwhile, everyone else was still talking about his body. He took moonlit swims with phosphorescent plankton that glowed around him with every motion. He sequestered himself in Byron Bay, a beachy haven in Australia. Then the pandemic hit, and the guy who could do it all-and who, since he was a teenager, had been doing it all, all the time-did very little. His list of titles is stunningly long, and wildly varied, for someone so young after Baywatch, he began veering toward dramas and shot a Netflix travel show about sustainability called Down to Earth with Zac Efron. Next, he starred in a slew of romances, rom-coms, and com-coms: Neighbors, The Lucky One, We Are Your Friends, That Awkward Moment, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, et cetera ad infinitum. People started looking very closely at his body after that. That film was a fit-guy debutant waltz for Efron. In 2017’s Baywatch, his onscreen abs looked almost painted on. I feel even loucher for writing about them, but the thing is, Efron’s arms have become part of his whole deal, appendages to his identity as well as to his torso-to say nothing of the torso itself. When he arrives at the steakhouse in Thousand Oaks, where the staff has squirreled us away in a back room behind the kitchen, Efron positions himself as though to background the biceps-leaning forward, with his hands loosely intertwined on the table-and I feel louche for peeking. The sharp lines of his arms were apparent even through a dust tornado and even from a safe distance away. When I got to the ranch in the hills north of Malibu, he was zooming about on an ATV, doing wild circles around the photographer and creating a cloud of dust. I had seen Efron’s biceps earlier, while on set for his photo shoot. I spot a vein so protuberant that it looks like it’s about to exit his skin. After Zac Efron removes his jacket and drapes it over the chair beside him, my eyes immediately zoop to his biceps peeking out from beneath his T-shirt. The images in AfterShot's initial import are less tonally nuanced and less detailed than the same images in Lightroom, DxO, and especially Capture One. Speed of import and quality of raw camera file conversion are two different things, and things that are often in opposition to each other. It's a pretty important missing piece of the workflow. Only after this can you import them into AfterShot. AfterShot doesn't even offer the option to move or copy files, so it's up to you to use your operating system or another utility, such as PhotoMechanic, to move pictures off your media cards. Lightroom only lets you do this when importing from a folder on the local disk. These numbers aren't completely comparable, since AfterShot isn't copying or moving the files, but just adding their info to its catalog database. This compared with 2:35 for Lightroom to complete both tasks, 2:41 for Capture One, and a group-leading 1:03 for PhotoDirector. Note that that's without actually moving the files it's simply adding them to its catalog. AfterShot beat most competitors, taking just 18 seconds (minutes:seconds) for the import, and another 46 seconds to finish building previews for a total import time of 1:04. I tested on an Asus Zen AiO Pro Z240IC running 64-bit Windows 10 Home and sporting a 4K display, 16GB RAM, a quad-core Intel Core i7-6700T CPU, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M discrete graphics card. Each file weighed in at about 25 to 30MB. Since speed of ingesting digital photos into your computer is a bragging point for Corel AfterShot, I tested it by importing 157 24MP raw files in. It also helpfully shows progress bars for the separate importing and preview-creation steps. It does however, create previews for editing and lets you apply presets during import, a plus of sorts. What this tells me is that the import doesn't actually copy the image files to your PC, but just indexes them in its own catalog. Upgrading for existing users cuts the price by $20.Īn old-style Windows XP-type window opens for importing, only letting you choose the AfterShot catalog to import to, not the PC folder. A free 30-day unlimited trial is available, with no payment info required. That price compares well with Capture One's ($299), DxO PhotoLab's ($149), and CyberLink PhotoDirector's ($99.99). AfterShot lists for $79.99, but is usually discounted. Pricing and Getting StartedĪfterShot has one-shot pricing, so you needn't worry about shelling out monthly contributions as you do with Adobe Lightroom Classic ($19.99 Per Month at Adobe)(Opens in a new window). Corel claims the current 64-bit software offers the fastest camera raw file conversion, but speed was not the only problem in previous versions. The current version, AfterShot Pro 3.5, adds blemish removal, watermarking, a preset library, and on-demand lens profile downloading. The second version sped up the program, made some interface changes, and added new editing tools. In our reviews of earlier versions of Corel's photo workflow software, we noted its weakness at importing, sharing, and some of the editing steps in between.
